About the clinic

Physiotherapy, diagnostic scanning and rehabilitation under one roof

We are a private musculoskeletal clinic in Southend-on-Sea, a few minutes from Shoeburyness. We assess, scan, treat and rehabilitate under one roof, which means fewer referrals onwards and less waiting about.

Essex Coast Physio is part of Axial Health, a musculoskeletal care group building clinics across South East England. Clinical decisions are still made here, by the clinical team looking after you.

How we work

Working out what is wrong comes first.

Most people arrive having already been told something about their problem, and quite often what they were told does not match what they are feeling. The initial appointment is mostly questions and testing. We want to know what actually hurts, what makes it worse, and what you have stopped doing because of it.

If we are not sure, we can scan on site rather than sending you away for weeks. Diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound lets us look at tendons, muscles and soft tissue in real time, while you move, which an X-ray cannot do.

Once we know what we are dealing with, we say so in plain terms, explain what the options are, and agree a plan with you. If physiotherapy is not the right answer, we will tell you that too and point you at whoever is.

What we stand for

Three values we hold ourselves to.

  1. Excellence

We do the unglamorous things properly. A full assessment before treatment, a working diagnosis explained in plain terms, and clinicians who keep their training current. If something is outside what we do well, we say so and help you find the person who does it better.

  2. Trust

You should always know what we think is wrong, what we are doing about it and why. We will tell you when treatment is working, when it is not, and when you no longer need to come back. Nobody is sold a course of appointments they do not need.

  3. Teamwork

Everyone here, from the front desk to the treatment room, works to the same plan for you. The clinical team talk to each other about the people they treat, so a second opinion is a conversation rather than a referral. You are treated by one clinician, but the whole team is behind the plan.

What is on site

Everything in one building.

The clinic has multiple treatment rooms, a rehabilitation gym, diagnostic ultrasound, shockwave therapy, infra-red sauna and a red-light therapy chair. That matters more than it sounds. It means your assessment, your scan and your treatment can happen in the same place, usually with the same clinician, without a referral between each step.

It also means we can teach your exercises properly: show you, watch you do them and correct them.

Who we treat

Mostly people who want their life back, not just a diagnosis.

Many of our patients are in their fifties, sixties and seventies, and many have been told at some point that they should expect less of their body from now on. We do not take that view. Strength, balance and movement respond to training at any age, and the aim of treatment is not only that the pain stops but that you keep doing the things you would miss.

We also see a good number of runners, golfers, gym users and people whose work has caught up with them. The approach is the same. Find the cause, treat it, then build your strength back up..
